Looking For Types Of Small Dogs?
Types of small dogs are classified as toy breeds by the American Kennel
Club (AKC), however, small dogs also exist in other AKC classified
breed groups and will be included in the list below.
These dogs come with a vast array of different characteristics, hair
types, and personalities. Due to the advantages of owning small dogs,
many are becoming quite popular and make wonderful lap companions for
seniors or those living in smaller environments such as apartments or
condominiums.
Since there is no firm agreement on what height or weight makes a dog a
toy, and the upper height limit of some of those toy dog breeds exceeds
12 inches at the withers, this places these dogs within the height
range of dogs in some other groups as well.
In other words, although a breed may not have the description of being
a toy dog, there are some other dog breeds that are relatively just as
small like the toy breeds and make wonderful lap dogs as well.
Small Dog Size Description:
For "general size description of small dog types", this list will
include all AKC dog breeds approximately 25 pounds or less and/or all
dogs with a height no larger than 15-17 inches. We found 49 types of
small dog breeds in the AKC dog breed list that fit this description.
